What is a CSA?

CSA stands for community supported agriculture, which is a direct-to-customer subscription service for farmers to sell products directly to customers.

How does a CSA work?

In the traditional CSA model, people pay for a season’s worth of produce (a membership), usually months in advance, so farmers can get ready for the growing season. The CSA member then receives a box of farm products, usually fruits and vegetables, every week throughout the harvest season. CSA members enjoy the convenience and quality of locally grown produce, while supporting their local farmer.  Your early support helps the farm buy seed, fertilizer and other supplies to prepare for the coming season.

Why should I join?

A CSA subscription is a great way to support Common Roots Farm. When you support Common Roots, you are supporting our organic practices of low-till sustainable farming, while knowing you are receiving local, organically grown flowers and berries that are both beautiful and better for you. Your support ensures people with developmental disabilities have the opportunity to grow healthy food and flowers for you.

How do I subscribe?

To partner with Common Roots Farm please sign up for a CSA share starting April 1, by visiting our website here where you can complete an application, choose a payment method, and designate your pick up location:

What can I expect?

The 2019 CSA season runs 19 weeks, from June 10-October 14, 2019. Our Berries & Blooms CSA will include a market bouquet (valued at $15), two pints of strawberries ($10), and a farmer’s surprise (such as a head of butter lettuce or culinary herbs or broccoli or raspberries, etc.). CSA customers will also have first option to purchase our fresh eggs, honey, and other value-added products.

What if I want to buy eggs?

We will sell a limited quantity of eggs each week. We will send out more details to our CSA customers about how to purchase eggs.

Cost for the 2019 season:

A CSA share costs $475, or $25/week.  Each share will include a market bouquet of fresh, organic cut flowers, two pints of organic, sun-ripened strawberries and a surprise from the farm depending on what is in season.  Because our farm is a new producer, we are passing along a savings to you of approximately $100 per share from usual CSA prices.  We are growing our production skills alongside farmers of all abilities.  If there is abundance, we will offer you additional produce at no additional charge. If we have any crop failures, we will work hard to compensate with other products so you continue to enjoy healthy food and beautiful flowers throughout the season.

Where do I pick up my CSA?

  • On farm pick up (Santa Cruz): Fridays 2-6 pm or Saturdays during farm stand hours, or by other pre-arrangement

  • Mountain View and Seabright locations: Tuesdays 3-6 pm

We will pack your CSA share in our box and ask you to bring your own box or bag to transfer your share at pick up. We will send more details about the pick up process when we confirm your CSA subscription.

What if I miss a share?

Please arrange for an alternative person to pick up your share if you're unable. If you cannot make your pick up, we will donate your box to a family in need that week.
