Have you been thinking about having your own bee hive to pollinate your garden and fruit trees and provide honey? For help with how to get started, come to the workshop for beginning beekeeping at Common Roots Farm (Formerly Costanoa Commons). Bodo Langen, a beekeeper for over 30 years and Amanda Frank, who has given many demonstrations on beekeeping will answer all your questions. These two knowledgeable members of the Santa Cruz Beekeeping Guild will discuss the life cycle of honey bees, the colony and bee year, and beekeeping equipment. In addition, they will talk about interacting with bees at different seasons and we will visit the active hives at Common Roots Farm . Bring a hooded rain jacket and wear long pants, so you can watch as the beekeepers interact with the hives. Part of the class will be outside, so dress warmly and wear garden shoes.
